What Makes a Pearl High Quality? A Simple Guide to Luster, Surface, Shape & Matching

Two freshwater pearl necklaces can have pearls of exactly the same size—and still look completely different and come with very different price tags.

Why?

Because pearl quality is about much more than size.

When choosing freshwater pearls, some of the most important things to look at are luster, surface quality, shape, color and matching. Understanding these characteristics makes it much easier to recognize a beautiful strand and choose pearls that are worth investing in.

At GemnGlam, we work exclusively with genuine freshwater pearls, selecting each piece not simply by size or shape, but by the overall beauty and character of the pearls.

Here are the qualities we pay the most attention to.

1. Luster: The First Thing You Notice

If there is one quality that can completely transform the appearance of a pearl, it is luster.

Luster describes the way light reflects from the pearl's surface and through its layers of nacre. A pearl with strong luster looks bright, lively and almost illuminated from within. Its reflections appear crisp rather than dull or cloudy.

Some exceptionally lustrous freshwater pearls can even develop a metallic or mirror-like appearance.

This is why two 8 mm pearls can look surprisingly different side by side. One may appear soft and chalky, while another seems to glow.

At GemnGlam, luster is one of our highest priorities when selecting pearls. You'll see this particularly clearly in pieces such as our Metallic Mauve Pearl Necklace, where the pearls display a beautiful metallic glow with lavender, bronze and subtle green overtones.

The shape may catch your eye first, but beautiful luster is often what makes you keep looking.

2. Surface: Natural Doesn't Mean Perfect

Pearls are organic gems, so completely flawless surfaces are rare.

Small dimples, growth marks, rings and other natural characteristics are part of how pearls form. Rather than expecting absolute perfection, pearl quality is usually judged by how clean and visually appealing the surface is overall.

Generally, pearls with fewer visible blemishes are more valuable when other qualities are equal.

But there is an important distinction: surface characteristics and pearl shape are not the same thing.

A beautifully shaped baroque pearl can have an exceptionally clean surface and outstanding luster. Likewise, a round pearl can be perfectly shaped but have weaker luster or more noticeable surface imperfections.

This is one reason we don't believe pearls should be judged by roundness alone.

Our larger baroque pearl pieces are a good example. Their irregular silhouettes are intentional and full of character, while the pearls themselves are selected for their beautiful surfaces and strong natural glow.

3. Shape: Is Round Always Better?

Perfectly round pearls have traditionally been highly prized because they are more difficult to produce. But that doesn't automatically make a round pearl more beautiful than an oval, button, ringed or baroque pearl.

Freshwater pearls naturally occur in a wonderful variety of shapes.

Round and near-round pearls create a classic, refined look and generally command higher prices when combined with excellent luster and clean surfaces.

Oval pearls have an elegant elongated shape and can feel slightly softer and more contemporary.

Button pearls have a flatter profile and work beautifully in modern designs and multi-strand jewelry.

Ringed pearls show natural circular growth patterns around their surface. These rings are part of the pearl's character rather than something that needs to be hidden.

And then there are baroque pearls—each one naturally irregular and essentially one of a kind.

Our Bronze Kiss / Aurora Baroque Pearl Set, for example, celebrates exactly this kind of individuality. The large baroque pearls aren't valuable because they are perfectly round; their attraction comes from the combination of impressive size, clean surfaces, aurora-like metallic luster and unique organic shapes.

When choosing between shapes, the better question isn't simply Which is better?

It's Which kind of beauty do you prefer?

4. Matching: The Detail You May Not Notice at First

Matching is one of the most overlooked aspects of pearl quality.

Look closely at a well-made pearl strand and you'll notice that the pearls feel harmonious. Their size, shape, color and luster work together naturally.

Achieving this can take considerable selection.

For a classic round or near-round strand, consistent matching is particularly important. Pearls that are similar in size, tone, shape and luster create the smooth, polished appearance associated with a fine classic necklace.

Our 11–12 mm Near-Round Freshwater Pearl Necklace is a good example. With pearls this large, finding enough near-round pearls with strong luster, clean surfaces and a harmonious appearance becomes increasingly difficult.

But matching doesn't always mean making every pearl identical.

In a multicolor necklace, for example, the beauty may come from carefully balancing different natural shades. In a baroque strand, the pearls may vary in shape while still sharing a similar size, luster and overall character.

Good matching should make a necklace feel intentional—even when the individual pearls are different.

5. Color and Overtone: Look Beyond White

Freshwater pearls aren't limited to classic white.

They can naturally occur in beautiful shades of cream, peach, pink and lavender, with some pearls displaying more complex mauve, bronze or purple tones.

Then there are overtones—the subtle secondary colors that seem to move across the pearl as the light changes.

A pearl may appear lavender at first glance, for example, but reveal flashes of bronze, pink or green under different lighting.

Our Metallic Mauve Pearl Necklace was selected specifically for this complexity. Its beauty doesn't come from one flat color, but from the changing tones visible across the strand.

Color doesn't necessarily determine quality on its own. What matters is the richness, attractiveness and harmony of the color together with the pearl's luster and other characteristics.

So, Why Can Two Pearl Necklaces of the Same Size Have Very Different Prices?

Imagine two necklaces made with 8–9 mm freshwater pearls.

The first has moderate luster, noticeable surface imperfections, uneven shapes and inconsistent matching.

The second has bright reflective luster, cleaner surfaces, more desirable shapes and pearls that have been carefully matched across the entire strand.

On paper, they're both simply 8–9 mm freshwater pearl necklaces.

In person, they can look worlds apart.

This is why pearl size alone should never be used to judge quality—or price.

The same principle becomes even more important with larger pearls. As pearl size increases, finding pearls that combine beautiful shape, clean surfaces, strong luster and good matching becomes progressively more difficult.

And What About Baroque or Ringed Pearls?

This is where pearl shopping gets particularly interesting.

A pearl doesn't have to be round to be high quality.

A ringed or baroque pearl with exceptional luster can be far more visually striking than a round pearl with dull luster. For many people, those natural irregularities are exactly what make the jewelry special.

At GemnGlam, you'll find both classic round and near-round strands and more expressive baroque, oval, button and ringed pearls.

We don't believe one shape is universally better than another.

Sometimes you want the quiet elegance of a beautifully matched round strand. Other times, one oversized baroque pearl with incredible luster can bring all the personality.

How to Choose a High-Quality Pearl Necklace

When you're looking at a pearl necklace, don't start with size alone.

Look at the pearls as a whole.

Do they glow when they catch the light? Are the reflections bright and defined? Do the surfaces look attractive? Does the shape suit the style of jewelry? Do the pearls work beautifully together as a strand?

Most importantly, do they make you want to look closer?

That's often where the beauty of a great pearl begins.

At GemnGlam, we select genuine freshwater pearls for their individual beauty—whether that means exceptional luster, clean surfaces, beautiful matching, unusual natural colors or the unmistakable personality of a one-of-a-kind baroque pearl.

Because when it comes to pearls, perfection isn't always about being perfectly round.

Sometimes, it's all about the glow.
